So you’ve made the big decision to sell your house, now what? There are so many things added to the to-do list you may not know where to even start. Here are my top 5 tips for getting your home market-ready:
Declutter
Now is the perfect time to clean out closets and storage and give away or sell those old prom dresses or electronics you no longer use. The less you have in your home, the cleaner and larger it will appear. If your home is too cluttered, the potential buyer will think there’s not enough storage. So even if you have to temporarily rent a storage unit, it’s a smart investment.
Neutralize + Depersonalize
I’m not suggesting take EVERY personal family photo down, but it won’t hurt to pare down a bit. People need to be able to visualize themselves in the space and too many photos may hinder that. Also, no home needs to be museum-like, but neutral colors can help potential buyers imagine their furnishings in the home. Some of my personal favorites are Dove White and Agreeable Gray.
Deferred Maintenance Repairs
Do you have simple household repairs that you’ve been putting off for a while? Now’s the time to put in a little sweat equity or hire a handyman to help out on those easy fixes. When buyers walk through and see little things that need to be repaired, they will wonder what big things are lurking. It’s best to get ahead of those simple things.
Curb Appeal
Buyers sometimes make decisions within seconds of seeing the home from the outside. You want to make them feel as welcome as possible, so they’ll want to stick around to see the inside. Some easy fixes are: replace dead plants with seasonal blooms, wipe off any spiderwebs that may have gathered and freshen up mulch/pine straw. Also, a cute welcome mat is always a great addition!
Find a great Listing Agent!
Most importantly, find a great listing agent with a proven track record of sales. It’s important to find someone that listens to your needs and works hard to market your home.
