Home Maintenance Tips for First Time Home Owners

You just bought your first home, now what? If renting is now a thing of the past for you, then there is certain routine maintenance that you are probably not accustomed to doing. Once you have unpacked and hung photos, make sure to also check the following off of your home maintenance projects list!

  • Replace locks – who knows how many copies of your new house key are floating around! Does the neighbor have one? Do previous workers have them? To ensure your safety, replace all keyed locks with new ones. You may even want to consider going keyless and install electronic key pads! This is a very affordable modification that you can even install yourself.
  • Swap out toilet seats – this is a personal preference, but a very simple and inexpensive change. You could even look into the seats that are soft close so you will never hear slamming seats again!
  • Change air filters – you air filters will need to be routinely replaced. Stock up when they are on sale and plan to change every quarter/season. Make sure to check your furnace as they come in various sizes.
  • Check all smoke detectors – test all and ensure that you have sufficient coverage; if they are older than 10 years, replace them with new ones. You can even get combination smoke/CO2 detectors.
  • Get fire extinguishers or check dates on existing ones – you should have at least one fire extinguisher on every floor and no more than 40 feet apart, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
