I love basketball. When I was younger my friend and I would get picked up in a cab (clearly dating myself as it would be Uber today) and get dropped off at this local Athletic Club hoping to see the likes of Dominique Wilkins, Steve Smith, or Kevin Willis…all of whom were Atlanta Hawks and were known to be at the center court working on their craft. I’ll never forget at eleven years old actually encountering my first “star” and playing horse (a basketball game) with my friend and Kevin Willis of the Atlanta Hawks.
Today many years later this Gym is what I refer to as a Hidden “Gem” still in Atlanta and an icon of some of the best current and former Athletes that Atlanta has ever seen. The Concourse Athletic Club located at the base of the King and Queen Building in Sandy Springs is one of the best fitness centers around. Basketball is still at the center of this gym and on Wednesday nights you can see the likes of some of the best former Atlanta Athletes playing in the 40 and over Mens league. Names like John Smoltz, Drew Barry, Travis Best, Pierless Price, Brian Finneran and many more can be seen competing center stage on the court.
Basketball in my view may be king here but no matter what your fitness needs are the Concourse Athletic Club is perfect for anyone looking to work out or have a social life on par with most Country Clubs. The gym boasts over three levels of fitness, a wide range of classes, personal trainers, tennis courts, swimming, free weights, family programs, a full service locker room, and a dine in restaurant that overlooks the gym. All of this is at an affordable rate for individuals and families and has easy access to 285 and 400.
And…if you are free come on down on a Wednesday night and check out the “Old Mans League”. Who knows…you may see me playing and you might just see an Old or Current Atlanta “Star”!
